Dear All
I am getting concerned over the positioning of a toilet next to a tea point.
If I can describe the set up it will help. Imagin two rooms, each no bigger than a large toilet cubical as the enter the first room this is a tea point the door off it is a toilet.
I dread to think what aerosols are being produced by the toilet and landing on the work top.
Does any one have any research.

Simon,
I don't have a copy with me, but have a look at the Building Regs. I think you will find that you need to have a lobby between a toilet and a kitchen.
You could always install two extractor fans, one in the toilet itself and one in the lobby which could reduce the temptation to use an aerosol. Getting rid of the aerosol could help, of course.
Alternatively, it may be cheaper to move the tea point or the toilet
Hope this helps

Coffee has been spluttered; I misread the subject, (me and my smutty mind!)
I would suggest that current regs call for two doors to separate a WC from a kitchen, unless there have been any amendments that I am not aware of.
I would imagine you refer to the 'timed release' air fresheners, or just general smells, (oh this is getting to be way too much information at this time of the morning, but I do know exactly what you mean.
Give the local authority Building Inspectorate a call, you will find them more than helpful, if you really want to chance it you could try the local EH officer.

When you mentioned aerosols I thought you meant the minute droplets of (contaminated) waste water that are released when the toilet is flushed. These droplets can then subsequnetly land on food preparation surfaces.
Is this what you meant or are you referring to the timed air-freshners that are often used?

Building regs require it, Food hygiene regs require it, Workplace regs require it - there definitely needs to be a ventilated space between toilet and "kitchen". Just as an afterthought, where is the wash hand basin then?

I wonder if IOSH still use the room off of the 'Disabled Toilet' at Head Office as a food/drink storage area?

Thanks for all the useful comments. To clarify I'm worried about TOILET aerosols and not the perfume.

Will the building regs apply to break areas ie where food is eaten but not prepared?
All our break areas are right outside the toilets ~ not nice certainly but are there any regs that cover this?

Thanks for the many responses, can some one point me in the direction of the Building Reg I'm looking for and where to find it. Is it in one of the Approved Documents?
