Posted By Louis Cooper BSEN 294 outlines specifications for machinery guards in relation to safety distances. Do I have to comply with these British Standards, or do I assess the individual risks posed by the machinery? The British Standard is not clear on this one - it refers to risk assessment in the context of 'reaching upwards'. My gut feeling is to risk assess, however my gut feeling is not based on fact!! I would appreciate any advice, however, any advice based on fact would be appreciated more than advice based on opinion. Thanks in anticipation

Posted By Tom Doyle Louis, The “reaching upward” distance referred to in BS EN294 is used to determine if guarding is required or not. If a risk assessment is not performed it would be prudent of you to apply the most restrictive measures. In other words, the assumed level of risk would be high therefore the reaching upward distance you would use 2.7m as the minimum hazard height. If the hazard height is less than 2.7m a protective structure in accordance with Table 2 should be used. If it has been determined to be impractical to provide a protective structure the access to the hazard must be prevented by applying guarding in accordance with table 5 and table 6. If a risk assessment is performed some of the less stringent requirement may be able to be applied. I hope this helps.
