can anyone please tell me if an under 18 yr old working in a garage (trucks) do his parents need to be informed of the risks etc and how far do you go for seperate risk assessments?

If they are over 16 but under 18 the employer must carry out a specific risk assessment for each young person.
If they are under 16 (school leaving age) then not only must they have their own risk assessment but a copy must be given to their parent/guardian prior to them starting in the workplace. (Note: There are some workplaces where under 16's are not permitted to be employed)

Hi Mel
I would ask the question of the responsible people, Has the apprentice been employed through a recognised college and have they been through a risk assessment course with this colledge. I would assume that if he is singed up correctly he will have been given the correct pre employment safety training and the college will initially check the site and working conditions and will periodicaly check that the correct criteria is being maintained. Nice to see apprentices being trained though.
