Posted By mel russell In a transport yard with 3 departments (hgv trucks & drivers, maintenance and cleaning departments) 95% of the staff clock in but the office people do not, is this discrimination or will they be excempt. the clocking in system, so we are told, is for 'health and safety' reasons, so we know who is on site, not for wages reasons. should everyone clock in or are the office people different.thanks for any help.

Posted By John Murgatroyd Clocking-in is necessary for hourly paid workers, for health and safety reasons....H&S of the company finances. Salaried office staff are inherently honest and trustworthy and are exempt from this minor irritation. Which is why they "get-in" at about 10 and leave at 3....get 6 weeks full sick pay and another 4 paid holiday...company cars etc etc etc etc !

Posted By Ron Hunter Your Organisation seems to be caught in a time warp. Either everyone clocks in (including the MD), or no-one does. "Health & Safety reasons"? Utter nonsense!!

Posted By Barry Cooper Mel If clocking in, is to have a head count in the event of an evacuation then everyone needs to clock in, even the MD, unless they have some other system of recording which member of staff are on site. Unless they record all attendances, then an evacuation cannot be validated. Sounds like an excuse

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Russell Barry sums it up well; it is perfectly acceptable for the office staff not to clock in, including the MD, you will however require a s&s alternative means to record people’s movements. You will have a job on your hands continually making certain they have signed in and out, the out bit is not to bad at the end of the day, unless you are a 24 hour operation, it is important however to be certain that the staff sign in/out whenever they leave and re-enter the premises. Best of luck Charles

Posted By john temple Hi Mel Is this the only system that is operated, i would pressume that the buisness operates a seperate system for staff, possibly an electronic diary. It is probably quite difficult to maintain the information of people on site if the site is multi user / or open for public access but it sounds like they have a system & and are trying to do what is reasonably practicable.
