Posted By stevehaigh Could anyone supply me with a procedure and system for disposing of unidentified cleaning products and other chemical items. Please do not suggest rge environment agency as they simply say contact a waste carrier.

Posted By Coshh Assessor This may sound facetious, it's not meant to be - can you use them up by cleaning some stuff? As a chemist I go up the wall when people give me unknown waste chemicals and expect me to identify and dispose of them - I insist that it is their job to investigate the history and find out what the stuff is. No identification, no disposal.

Posted By stevehaigh Actually we inherited the products thats why there is no ID or MSDS: and to be honest, we are assuming they are cleaning products, but we are not sure, thats why we wish to dispose of them

Posted By Coshh Assessor Well thinking about it logically what are the possible options with waste? Dump to landfill (not on), chuck down the drain (not on if you're responsible), use in some process (presumably cleaning), incinerate (not a bonfire in the yard but via a waste contractor), chemically react or separate to reduce the hazard (unlikely), um biodegrade (probably not). What scale is the problem, a few bottles you found in the cleaner's cupboard or a significant amount?

Posted By Carrie Ellerby Steve, recently had some dealings with the new hazardous waste and Waste Acceptance Criteria. It's a minefield! Because you can't identifiy the substance and its contents I believe you will have to get the waste analysed. In the past I have used Safety-Kleen to come in and do this but I aren't sure whether they would still do it under the new legislation. They used to charge approx £100 (maybe a bit more) for the sample then once identified they would remove the waste from site. HTH Carrie

Posted By IanD The only way forward, as I see it, is to contact a waste disposal company they will have to analyses the waste and dispose of it in accordance with the regulations. If you are in the Yorkshire area I can give you the name of a small company I have used for years. Regards Ian
