Posted By Eric Taylor Rumour has it that the governing body for most UK Motot Sport (the MSA), are going to apply the Health & Safety regulations to events. I compete and mechanic at various rally events, (I also have a NEBOSH general). As none of this it is done as anyone's employee. As a body the MSA can require we comply with anything they come up with but if they aren't going to do it this way, I can only presume they wouldl classify it as voluntary work. Not an area I am familliar with. Anyone any idea of how much will apply?

Posted By Cr8r Eric What about Section 3 HASAWA anyway? Voluntary worker or spectator, this must surely apply?

Posted By Ian Goddard I agree section 3 of the 74 act would apply. section 3: the self-employed, other employees and the public must not be exposed to dangers or risks to health and safetyt from work activites. regards Ian Goddard

Posted By Martin Gray Eric As the HSE have issued a clear guidance booklet covering motor sports events (HSG112) which the MSA were involved in this would be a good place to start. This publication covers Planning for Safety, Employee & Volunteer health and safety, Spectator Safety,Emergency Planning, Competitor & vehicle safety. The only area not covered which we would like to see included is the effect on the surrounding area, i.e. visibility to major roads, access on and off site, impact on surrounding area. Martin

Posted By Eric Taylor Thanks for that guys, I'll go start reading up. Question to ponder though, at what point does the volunteer bit start? I often spend 2-3 nights a week in the garage preparing the car I either navigate or mechanic for. When will the rules and regulations start to apply? arrival / signing on at the event hopefully, but what about driving there and back? We've done a few trips the driving regulations would have a heart attack at.
