Hi all, nice odd one for you!
Right then we have tin huts in the car park which act as out "smoking shelters". A question has been raised about lightening strikes. The hut is steel and is bolted to the ground with steel bolts.
1/ do we need to get it fully earth bonded?
2/ If we did what would lightening do to the occupants and the hut if it stuck?
3/ What would lightening do to the hut and its occupants if we didn't get additional earth straps added?

Well this is an odd one, to add a little bit to it they would probably give up smoking! and you won't need to paint the shelter again! But to be serious how are bus shelters catered for? Is there a highlikelyhood of such a lightening strike anyway?

I smoke and if there was a thunder and lightening storm on the horizon or actually occuring there is no way i'd say 'oh i fancy a fag , i know, i'll go and stand under the tin shed!'
If you did earth bond it etc does that guarantee that it'll be safe?
maybe put a sign on it that says ' We know you are stupid so in the event of smoking during a lightening storm , please stand in the centre of the shelter as far away from the walls as possible to avoid electrocution to death'

The hut *should* act as a Faraday Cage in nice dry conditions - but as lightning sometimes comes with rain (d'uh!) it might not work so nicely - there may be leakage. Especially if someone is leaning against it inside.
Chat with your local electricity board - they should have a safety advisor.
My expertise is very limitied here, but I think the shelter would be earthed if bolted to the ground (please take specialist advice, just giving you something to ask)... but I don't think being earthed would actually protect your smokers anyway.

Of course, the best protection system in the world is voided if the the individual is struck by lightning on the way to or from the shelter!

Back in the early 80s I was doing some geological/archeological survey work in the Netherlands. There is no thrill quite like being very much the tallest object in the centre of a huge flat plain while hanging on to a metal rod stuck 3 metres into the ground in the middle of a thunder storm (mostly we ran away as soon as we saw a hint of thunderheads on the horizon, but on at least one occasion we were so absorbed we didn't notice until the first awesome boom rang out).
With a bit of care surely your smokers could use the lightning on those days when they forget their lighters?

Thanks for the advice, I'll ring our local electricity company. I was aware of the Faraday principal but didn't understand it - looks like it'll make little difference!
As for picking on us smokers... (Is that a boo / hiss I here from the audience?)
