Posted By kate p Can anyone help me? At the moment our food production wear white lab coats which are not very visible when they come into the warehouse. Hi vis is mandatory in warehouse so we are looking for something that can replace the whites does anyone know of anything very light that we could use?

Posted By Caro M I looked into Hi-vis for our warehouse operatives. I was offered the option of having Hi-vis strips put onto the standard type of overalls they already wore by a hire/laundry supplier. Speak to your supplier, they may be able to do something similar with the lab coats.

May I ask you to provide answers to the following please as they will help us to provide relevant comments for you to consider?
Why it is necessary for the Lab staff to enter the warehouse?
If it really is essential for Lab staff to enter the warehouse, are there any substantial differences in what they do v the warehouse staff?
Why are the warehouse staff required to wear hi-vis ?

Posted By Steve Buxton I have just been talking to my good lady who worked in a food lab until recently and she wondered why the staff didn't take off the lab coats when they left the lab. Surely to avoid cross contamination (in both directions) the lab coats should stay in or just outside the lab, and the staff can then pick up a hi vi as they enter the warehouse ????

It is a food preparation area so they need to wear whites. They need access into the warehouse to get product and pallets

Posted By Steve Buxton I have just spoken again to my resident expert (the wife) and she says that the junction between the food preparation area and the warehouse is a Critical Control Point under HACCP and therefore the person leaving the food preparation area should take off the lab coat and put on the hi vis, and then the opposite when returning to the food preparation area.
Again the purpose is to prevent contamination from pallets, outer wrappings, etc etc.
The HACCP audit is as important as the H&S audit in this instance but both can be accommodated.

Posted By Peter Longworth Why can't they wear a hi-vis vest (Cost of a few pounds only) over their lab coats.

Posted By Steve Buxton Because the lab coats should not leave the lab !

Posted By Peter Longworth So why would they then need hi-vis lab coats? Why not just hi-vis jackets?
