Risk Assessment KPI tools (How do you do it?)

Good Morning all
I am a great beliver in the 50 minds are greater than one motto so please have a read and if possible add some input etc that I may have overlooked or may use to improve tool under development.
I am currently close to the completion of an Excel tool that is capable of producing the following automatic data:-
1. Provides a suitable template to cover most Hazards and could be linked to a deeper assessment should this be required. (will hold 1000's if needed)
2. Capable of filtering Quantitve and/or Qualitve calculations.
3. Monitors remedial/control measure dates.
4. Counts days actions are overdue
5. Counts Number of risk assessments according to filtering criteria set i.e. High risk, No persons at risk etc.
6. Shows amount of days for certain criteria i.e. days till next review, days overdue for review etc.
7. Creates an auto Risk register and lots more including the generation of a report and maybe graphs.
After this initial set up (soon to be completed)
I want to set up a calculator that shows certain statistical and comparative info relating to the companies management of the risk assessment process.
The overall aim is to:-
1. Make monthly, quarterly safety updates more statistically based at little time cost to the H&S persons responsible for reporting the data.
2. Provide a more effective way of monitoring and reviewing RAs at a cost (free to charities and future beta testers) that even a Yorkshire based Director will not spit his chips out.
3. Lots of other inspirations including my own interests at heart.
What I am trying to discover is the following: -
1. Is there a need for such a tool or is there a already cheap software that covers this area?
2. Also what are your thoughts on the pro's & Cons of creating such a system?
3. Have you any suggestions ideas that will make this tool more effective i.e. other possible data that can be added relating to the RA process?
Finally, has anyone made good use of the previous tools I developed?
I will be providing a free version of this tool when ready, for those that take the time to think about this subject and take the time to add input, data and valid criticism to the discussion.
Best regards
Jason

Hi Jason,
This sounds a fascinating project. I am also keen to automate reporting of KPI type info and stats. My area of interest at the moment is using the same tools across different disciplines, so it would be interesting to see how easily your tool could be adapted to environmental aspects, quality assurance risks etc. Have you condsidered this?

Hi Jason
As an average overloaded, overworked, under paid safety professional one of my biggest problems is chasing updates on risk assessment control measures. This tool would be of extreme help if it can be formed into a monthly management report as i am not always in a position to give this infomation to my managers without a tedious trawl around all departments. I too, also think that this tool would be of great value if it could be adapted to environmental impact assessments. I would also be interested in hearing about these other tools that you been working on.

Just A quick Update:-
I am getting there slowly but surely,
The process I am developing could quite easily be transferred to other subjects i.e. quality, env as long as the user has some excel modifying skills.
I am very keen in developing a Fire Risk Assessment Package that also monitors the many steps needed to conform and reminds me or Management of areas that need chasing up on.
What I hope to provide is a framework that at least shows what can be done to make H&S not so time wasting at times.
At the moment, I am struggling with Date format in excel as it always defaults to 0/01/00 when left blank with interferes with some hopeful calculations.
What other SPI's could be calculated and tracked this way, I wonder?

An Australian Safety Ergonomist, Maurice Oxenburgh, designed a safety process management model which you may find useful to refer to; it was published by Taylor and Francis in 2004. It is more ambitious than demonstrating that 'H&S (is) not so time wasting at times' as it aims to support the view that competent ergonomic safety management is often the most profitable course of action for an organisation.
I believe you could improve the quality of assessing risks posed by some hazards by using an ergonomic framework, which you could include with a checklist referred to different parts of the body and a general category of 'cognitive' factors.
In your first email, you refer to 'qualitative calculations'; are not calculations by their natural quantitative?

Hi Kieran
Very Interesting points you made.
I have sent you a very early work in progress example. Though not anyway near finished, you will probably get the idea that the ultimate aim of this tool will be to keep tracks of the RA process and to report KPI data without much work needed on the safety managers part. It should also add some form of document control as well.
I am not working in Safety so this is only a fictional and generic template that other will use to form their own process on. You are very right in what you say about Quantitive and Qualitive. I am just putting the option for both so that some may remove one if deemed fit.
The overall aim of this sheet is really to show how one can track and monitor many RA's. I have to be very generic here, as I want this tool to be later developed to track Fire Safety compliance and other big projects. It is just getting the first beta version up and then being able to adapt the principles to other subjects.
Once I get the foundation calculation right, It should auto generate a register of RA's and provide up to date info on status etc all by the simple input of a date.
Not an easy task for a novice like me but am learning and have not cracked yet. If you feel your line of work can be utilised or attached into a similar system feel free to expand and discuss privately.
p.s. please ignore the the current Risk rating in the example as I have not yet applied a working example. The boxes have just been filled to help with the formulars.

Hi ,we are currently looking at a system called dataix, that sounds very similar to the one you are in the process of designing. The Software includes risk managment, complaints handling and freedom of infomation, incident reporting and training records.the cost is 12 grand.Would you be entering in days lost due to an accident?
What otheer tools have you developed?I am new to the chat room so i HOPE YOU FORGIVE ME FOR ASKING

April,
Before you sign up to Datix and spend your twelve grand. May I suggest you talk to some colleagues in the NHS. The NHS use this system and some love it but in my experience some hate it.
Typical complaints are:
The use of 'coding' for everything
The 'tie in' to the system
As I say, ask around first.
Jason,
The tool you are developing sounds very interesting indeed!
I think you have thought of most things although it is difficult to comment having not seen it.
I would be very interested in seeing the finished product.
Have you thought of going into business with these applications?

this sounds a fascinating idea/project, i am a 21 year old H&s assistant and such a tool would help me in many ways,
keep up the good work.

There is a method behind the madness money wise. At the moment I am just getting as many SPI frameworks for Monitors as possible. I then need to wrap these into a database capable of holding it all at little expense. (All stuff I am completely dumb at but due to experiences in game modding I have noticed the skills are abundant).
2nd stage is to make sure these are user friendly to as wide an audience as possible.
3rd Stage is to make tools fully customisable is the simplest way possible.
Then they all need wrapping up, beta testing, which is what you guys do in an obscure way.
Then I approach software experts (game modders as they are very skilled and know all the cheap methods) to package products with dashboards etc.
I am not a greedy man yet; Kudos for a later date is my main concern at the moment. At 32, I have plenty of time to get money lol.
