Posted By Ken C Dear all I have been asked today if I can put a COSHH assessment together for Dioxins that have been identified in the ground. As I have an Engineer who is to work on the site as part of a Geotechnical investigation I need the COSHH assessment to cover this particular risk. Unfortunately, all the info that I have been able to find at the moment deals with Dioxins that are airborne. Does anyone know where I can get information that specifically relates to Dioxins in the ground? Also, if anyone has already done this before then I would appreciate their help. As with all thing Health and Safety my Engineer has only advised me today and they want to start on site on Thursday................some things never change! Many thanks. Ken

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Ken Have you seen the HSE's CHAN: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/chan27.htm? Dioxins have very high boiling points and so inhalation of vapour should be insignificant in a geotechnical environment but you may need to control inhalation of contaminated dust if the ground is dry. Skin exposure should also be considered; any gloves required would need to be mechanically robust as well as suitably resistant to the dioxins. Your geotechnical staff are, presumably, already aware of the importance of good personal hygiene but there is no harm in reminding them. Paul
