Posted By srd I am about to embark on the NEBOSH Certificate course at a local college, which I should complete in 30 weeks time. In the meantime I would like to gain H&S experience at my current place of work by offering to assist our current Health & Safety Manager. I thought about suggesting to my employees that I undertake the extra work in exchange for some sort of job title that would look good on my CV for the future. What sort of job title do you suggest for an unqualified person such as myself -'Assistant', 'Advisor', 'Co-Ordinator' ? I should point out that I do have previous management training which has touched on H&S, but this is going back a while now. I also have over 30 years experience of working with this company. I have also just completed and passed a 12 week part-time distance learning Occupational Safety, Health and Environment course, which was a pre-requisite to taking a BSc, but for which there was no award. Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Just an opinion here nothing else, but I have had people in the past doing just what you are; I have in my wisdom usually bestowed upon them the title of 'Health & Safety Administrator' it has worked very well and gives you ample time to proceed through the ranks. It is still something to use on your CV, I will and must agree with you that any title you use must be under the direction of a suiatble & sufficiently qualified H&S Manager/Director/Supervisor with appropriate experience, qualifications & knowledge. What you must ensure is that you are fully aware of your own limitations in H&S, don't stretch yourself to much at first in an effort to 'overshine' we are after all jointly responsible for the lives of people, sorry to sound like the Head Master, never forget how just one small mistake can have tragic consequences, it is this sobering thought that usually manages to keep my feet firmly on 'Terra Firma' I wish you the very best in your advances in H&S, despite what others will say I can only state it was the best thing I ever did! By the way, do consider having due experience in another subject that would go 'hand in glove' with H&S, Quality Assurance, DDA, Investors in People etc etc,just a few examples, there are many more, HR again is ideal. It never hurts to offer an employer that extra mile to 'shine' and unless you end up in a highly demanding industry or any industry with high employment there are not that many positions about that allow you to spend 100% of your time on H&S matters. Posted By srd Thanks both, and thanks to Charles for the additional and important advice. As for the additional role, well the current H&S Manager also looks after purchasing, so I suppose if I concentrated on that also I could cover for him during sickness / holidays. Stephen.
