Posted By Michelle Wilson I've a query about storage of large quantities of paint (10 litre tins, most unopened, some very old) They are currently in a brick built store with a screen window for ventilation but the door isn't fire resistant (above the normal resistance of wooden doors) and doesn't seal too well. No inventory of contents, some non-flammable (irritant) material also kept in the store. Anyone got any thoughts on what's required?

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Just completed a similar project Michelle, a full inventory of products held with manufacturers safety data sheets held along with and specific COSHH RA's. Access is impossible now unless you have the appropriate key, it is a case of job done and ticked off. If you are not intending to use the paint/products etc then I see no reason why you do not arrange for the safe disposal of them thus eliminating any potential problems, the local authority depots have official channels for the safe disposal and specialist advice should be requested prior to disposal. If it is impossible to make safe or you choose not to dispose then I guess its thinking caps on again, if the latter then no doubt someone with more brain cells than me will come up with something else. You could always ask if it’s ok to paint your house that gets rid of the problem! Charley

The 2nd will be "What are the Fire, Environmental and CoSHH issues of what we decide to keep?". The 3rd should be "How to dispose of the stuff we no longer want?" and the 4th "Is the existing storage for the stuff we keep compliant with current envionmental, fire and H&S requirements?". Enjoy!
