I need to install an alternative method for contacting a first aider on site - we currently use the tannoy system but this is proving unsucessful as it can't be heard in all areas.
We are quite a large site with 5 separate buildings.
We have tried pagers, mobiles, walkie talkies and cordless phones but unfortunately we have a huge reception problem in our area which is further compounded that many of our first aiders work in cleanrooms (which are essentially metal boxes).
I'd be interested to know what methods other companies have?

Hi Sarah
We have a meridian phone system that allows you to post a call down everyones telephone speaker, however we have framed lists on display in all areas with adequate cover that can be sought verbally.

Hi Sarah
In your posting you have apparently effectively removed all of the most easily implemented solutions. However, I have to ask why there is a problem with reception across all types of normal communication media?
Fixed phones wouldn't have this problem and there are many devices available that enable the fixed system to be extended into a more mobile one. Clean rooms can also be fitted with simple means of summoning First Aiders.
Incidentally, how are the occupants of the Clean Rooms notified of an evacuation?

Most places I have worked have a central emergency number manned by Security who then raise first aid help by fixed line telephones from a list.
If all your first aiders move around so often as to negate fixed line telecoms, consider having at least one first aider in each building whose location is fairly steady.
There are many technical solutions to poor reception, but most of them are costly booster/repeater type options.

Sarah,
Presuming that you are thinking about needing a first aider for a genuine emergency, rather than a sticking plaster job, could you use the fire alarm system? If you have a modern fire alarm system, many can be used to make specific announcements. Or possibly you could arrange to have a different signal for 1st aiders? Not a cheap solution, but one you could perhaps introduce over time.
The other possibility is a pager system similar to those used in respite and care homes. Again these systems can be linked to modern alarms of all sorts.
Trust this is food for thought

Thanks for all the comments.
The fire alarm may be an option as are LED displays - i'll look into these.
We already have boosters fitted but reception still is poor - something to do with living in Norfolk I guess??
