From experience as an occupational psychologist and registered safety practitioner, I've developed a model of safety leadership based on skilful chess-playing.

I intend to use it to coach safety managers and others in safety leadership. At this stage, I'd like to test out applications of the chess-based model during the next six months by playing chess games with one or two other keen safety practitioners.

If you are a safety practitioner who enjoys a game of chess and live within about 20 miles of central London and you would like to explore this opportunity, please let me know.

Kieran, I'd be interested, though my chess is a tad rusty (so few people play these days)! I'm based in Chelmsford, but can travel, drop me a line.

Regards

I am not based anywhere near London so the physical game is out of the question (though I would love to bring your Southern war trophy back to the North :)taunt)

I am curious however as to what the full game involves and the rules of play i.e. do I need to be expert on safety leadership? Or will a shop floor person do i.e. (Health & Safety’s biggest sceptic and often find myself becoming a hypocrite when trying to bind the two in a pragmatic way.

I can play online as long as you do not have Fritz or chessmaster 10 running in the background.

Anyway good luck

Jason

Brett: I'll email you separately with my telephone number.

Jason: To my knowledge, occupational status (as distinct from job role) is not correlated with tasks of safety leadership, skilful chessmanship or safe working behaviour. At the same time, scepticism, lateral thinking, thinking 'outside the box' and beyond the letter of the law, the ability to win support and counter opposition, where appropriate with decoys, can be appropriate elements of both safety leadership and skilful chessplaying.

At this stage, the chessmanship model is simply a basic framework for understanding many of the factors associated with safety leadership; as it matures, I'll find some vehicles for disseminating it.

Hi Kieran
I think that what we frequently do on this Forum isn't that different to your project. It is however, far more difficult to validate the effects on a meaningful scale with those who participate in this forum.

Yes, Frank, it's not unusual to relate opening phases of skilful chessmanship to exchanges on the forum.

In the model I've designed, middle and end phases require detailed familiarity with particular situations. Because this involves circumspect attention to the position of the practitioner him/herself, I think it's practically impossible to represent through an online open forum.

My chess playing probably doesn't meet the description 'skilful' but I can probably play to 'NEBOSH certificate' equivalency :-)

I work in the City and live in Witham and would be interested in helping out too.

Hi Kieran,
I'm from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in Malaysia. I'm doing some information search for our annual conference theme. I had this idea of safety leadership is equivalent to chess playing. i tried searching the internet and found your chat room. I'm interested to know more about this concept of yours. Thanks.

I link three strands of research to active leadership.....

1. into 'problem-solving' by Herb Simon and others, used chessplaying as a model of problem-solving

2. into 'successful intelligence' and 'metaphors' by Robert Sternberg which reflects how effective leaders set priorities and communicate

3. into 'dimensions of transition' by George Kelly, which I'm translating into a model of leadership (and other forms of) coaching
