Hello All
We were currently visited by the HSE a few weeks ago regarding the backs 2005 initiative.
They were quite happy with some of our ways in which we work, but still asked us to improve in other areas were possible.
one was to do more MAC Assessments.
but im finding this quite hard due to the union holding me back. they want to be involved in everyone, which i dont have a big problem with, but it also means they have to come off thier job, which at the present time we are quite busy, and i get the ear bending off management. what im asking is, is it practicle to have the union involved with every assessment, when they recieve a copy when ever i do one anyway.
regards
Patson

I think the key point here, which is common to all types of risk assessment, is not so much 'practical' as 'valuable'. One of the common weaknesses of many assessments that I have seen has been not to include those doing the task (whether TU or not). This results in a weak assessment that (1) misses key points about how the task is really done, (2) good suggestions for improvements and (3) buy in which is vital for effective implementation. My suggestion would be to jointly prioritise the tasks likely to represent the most significant risks and then focus on these initially with employee input. Maybe even get really radical by inviting a member of management to sit in on one of the assessments so that they can hopefully see that it is a worthwhile collaborative process and that its better to do one assessment in this way than large numbers in isolation which are then 'given to the employees'. I appreciate that there may be management / TU aspects here, so focus on which employees can best contribute. Hope this helps.
Regards RJ

You have been given the task of carrying out the assessments not the union. Yes you must consult those who carry out the tasks and the union. You couild arrange a meeting with the safety reps at a convienient time too discuss your assessments. Don't let them walk all over you because they will if they are that way inclined.
I know I was a rep the good ones are a bonus to any H&S manager the bad ones are a pain in the backside. From experiance the good outweigh the bad.
