Posted By Jo Scott Smith Hi
Every now and again I get an interesting query and I thought I would share this one with you.
Our fundraising team want to run a "how many people can you stuff into a mini" competition and need a risk assessment.
Has anyone had experience of organising one of these, know of someone who could help with the risk assessment or would members care to suggest potential hazards and control measures themselves?
Thanks for you help.
JO

Posted By Ron Hunter Hazard = asphyxiation. Effect = death, probability = highly likely. Conclusion = find something more sensible to do. Otherwise, tell them you do not wish to be associated with such a risky venture.

Posted By David P. Johnson I know of this having been done before in a Camper van and a Caravan, so its not totally unchartered territory.
One suggestion I can make is that the Sky show 'Brainiac' did a 'How many fat people can we fit in a caravan only a couple of months ago. Perhaps contacting them would be of some use. Otherwise, you could contact Mini direct (having said that, for this kind of promotion you've got to be either a dealer of the manufacturer, right? ;-) ) and ask their thoughts on it. They may even make a contribution to your cause!

Posted By Peter MacDonald Oh please.....
Only hazard is that of anticlimax, you'll probably get no more than 8.

Posted By David P. Johnson Pfft. 8? No way. At least 10 or 12.
That's even more laughable than the first response.

Posted By srd Well The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 must surely apply!
And from the HSE website:
>If your assessment identifies risks of serious injury >from work in confined spaces ....... the Confined >Spaces Regulations 1997 apply and the following key >duties will apply:
>1 - avoid entry to confined spaces e.g. by doing the >work from outside;
So there you have it - you should avoid cramming people into the mini and instead see how many you can cram outside of it. I'd say this would be a few more than the 8 or 10 previously mentioned.
Stephen.

Posted By Gilly Margrave Is it just me or is the subject line to this thread just a little ambiguous? "Stuffing people in a mini challenge" - is it a mini challenge to see how many people you can stuff (taxidermy or management theory)? or maybe the sort of two peron challenge where the gearstick can be a serious elfansafety challenge;)

Posted By John Webster 8? 10 or 12? ...Er, the world record is 18 in an old type mini-cooper! Managed to get 13 in my Riley Elf back in my mad student days - and drove it a few yards (private track). Somebody has managed 25 in a VW Beetle would you believe

Posted By Mark Mace Having read all of the above, its a lot of fun whats been written, some parts "i.e. the serious bits are actually quite usefull to us newer members and will probably be remembered due to the quirky nature that it has been supplied in.
I hope everyone of you conttinue to enjoy what you do.
I must note however that everyone has assumed that the "MINI" is a car, why not a mini sub that would present even more of a challenge and far greater risks.
regards
Tony

Posted By John Webster Now a serious answer, having "been there" before H&S meant very much to me (in fact, before the HSWA existed). Yes, there are risks, but it is also a lot of fun.
Firstly, check the car over for sharp edges and jaggy bits. You should remove the battery and possibly the gear lever. If you are going to include stuffing the boot, ensure that the catch will open with pressure from the inside. It may be better to leave the handbrake off with the wheels chocked.
I would not worry too much about the possibility of twisted or wrenched joints and limbs - the participants should accept this if they want to participate, same as in any sport. If all participants sign up, the entry form can include a disclaimer. The main significant risk is that of asphyxiation from crushing.
Ensure participants have a loading plan so that it's not a "free for all", and if its not working they should come out, review tactics and try again. Use a "buddy" system so that if anybody appears to be in difficulties, a single shout of a code word from the buddy will stop the activity.
Above all, keep each attempt as short as possible. The most crushed person is likely to be one of the first in and last out.
Make sure you have adequate first aid cover in the unlikely event that something does go wrong, but enjoy your day and I hope you make lots of dosh for your cause.
PS I doubt if I could even get in and out of a mini myself these days :-). And to think there used to be 8 of us in there every Friday night on the way home from the pub.

Posted By david cairns try this one http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/Mini Car Cramming The greatest number of people to fit in a Mini was achieved on July 3, 2000, when a total of 18 women crammed into a Mini Cooper outside the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, West Midlands, UK. This team beat the previous record, set by the Reading Ladies’ Rugby Club (UK), by one person.

Posted By Sheila EJ Keogh If they really have nothing better to do than to stuff people into cars, I would suggest contacting somebody like the transport laboratory and asking to borrow their crash test dummies. If they say no, why not consider using stuffed toys instead (no worries about HSWA, MHSWR, Confined Spaces or Human Rights....)

Posted By Cr8r Please.
Since when was a car a confined space?
Sensible risk debate?
Remove sharp objects, leave windows open, get them not to wear buckles, metal buttons, multi zipped jackets etc, take sharp objects out of pockets (eg keys). Tell them to take it gently and HAVE FUN!!!
