Posted By uisafe I find a fire extinguisher with sign read "water", but it is foam extinguisher underneath, can anybody help to explain the difference between water extinguisher and foam extinguisher?

Posted By Coshh Assessor Um, the water one dispenses plain water and the foam one dispenses water-based foam. In most situations where you have a water extinguisher a foam one will be at least as good. It sounds as if a water extinguisher has been replaced by a foam one, that is probably fine and you just need to change the sign.

Posted By Frank Hallett Hi uisafe; I've not seen your nom de plume on this Forum before. Clever play on pronunciation! Who are you really?
If I have interpreted your posting correctly; I must agree with the first response.
Please check that the type of foam that is expelled is compatible with the expected throw or how far the liquid will travel in the air. Aerated foam travels very poorly in air and normally requires the operator to be much closer to the seat of the fire whilst AFFF is virtually no different to water in its behaviour.
What is the shape of discharge of the fluid? Is it a simple jet like a hosepipe or a spray? How does it compare with that of the missing water extinguisher that has been replaced? There are different types of foam that behave in different ways and have different characteristics so these are important questions..

Posted By uisafe Hi, Frank, my real name is luan, the reason I quit to use this name is bacause my password is changed by the system (maybe) and difficult to remember, but I like this forum very much, it gives me a lot of help by some good men, so I registered again by my email box name which is easy to remember. I also have another email box called vrsafe@126.com, also good? The liquid in the extinguisher is AFFF, jet is pipe hose style, but the signs does read water, I heard someone call it "water" fire extingher before, if in this way can we let the sign read " water"?the signs and AFFF extinguishers are left by the project team before. I am not sure it is a wrong sign or there are some sign standards to refer. Appreciate with your help!

Posted By Coshh Assessor If it is AFFF in the extinguisher it isn't a water extinguisher and you need to change the sign. Standard signs are available from lots of catalogues.
