Posted By Alex Ryding HI All, One of our equipment manufacturers is building us a large line, integrating several pieces of equipment. We requested that the e-stops stop the whole line but they have built it so the e-stops only stop the local piece of equipment. I have said that by risk assessment we want e-stops that stop the lot. They are retaliating asking me to prove in legislation that it is a requirement as they feel risk assessment isn't sufficent to do it!!! Anyway would anyone have either: opinions on global or local e-stops, and know of any legislation to back up e-stoping the whole line? Thanks

Posted By Starbuck I would just demonstrate how regs 14-18 or PUWER justify the findings of a risk assessment. I am not aware of any specific requirement to stop the whole line. But the requirements of reg 15 I'm sure can be applied well to your situation, provided the risk warrents it :)

Posted By Nikki Browett There is no requirement in PUWER to stop the whole line, just to provide an additonal safeguard for use only when the other safeguards in place will not prevent risk of injury in the event of something happening. Lines can be different. There may be additional hazards created by stopping the whole line instantanously or vice versa. Your RA should include consideration of these factors. You don't say why you would want the the whole line stopped so it's difficult to comment. If there are valid reasons discuss it with the manufacturer further or is it possible to find another manufacturer?
