Posted By Mark E Any help would be appreciated. One of our off-site departments are based on the first floor of a building, which has a 2 flight staircase and a "Concord" Disabled platform. The platform states it can take one person plus a person in a wheelchair, and the SWL is 750lbs/340kg. Various people are calling into question the ability for this lift to carry other items. The department that uses it is the IT dept, and they will take in the lift, P.C's, VDU's and other components, etc. I have been unable to contact the company direct (no details) but have managed to find a dealer. They state the primary function is for disabled access, i.e. wheelchair bound person, plus one other, but they could not "really see a problem" if used for any other purpose, within the SWL of 340kg. Anyone had a similar problem ? Any help, advice or guidance would be most appreciated. Regards Mark

Posted By Jeff Manion Couple of things to consider. One the lifting equipment will require routine tesing inspection i.e. LOLER so assuming that tests prove OK fine, but advise testing organisation. If it is in use by others rather than the intended person, you may receive a slap on the wrist, this is and should be considered and "management issue". JM

Posted By Mark E An additional note. The Lift has no specific primary user within the organisation, and is unlikley to be used for its primary function. It is place due to the DDA

Posted By David J Bristow Mark I am intrigued as to your statement that the lift was only installed because of the DDA? Are you therefore saying that the lift is not required for its intended purpose? Regards David B

Posted By Mark E The lift was installed prior to our department moving into the building. The previous occupants were an NHS trust, and they had disabled patients visiting the site. They have now moved out, and at present there are no disabled people on site, and for the past 10 months they have been there no disabled person has required the use of the lift. However, the lift remians available to any person that requires it. My concern is, no one is using the lift for its intended purpose, and staff are being told they have to carry heavy items up 2 flights of stairs, with an increase potential for injury. I am not criticising the need for a lift for DDA, only can we use it when it is "not in use". Is this a world gone mad, or just me going mad ? Frustrated and confused, Mark

Posted By Robert K Lewis Mark It is a lift designed for lifting people and therefore is quite capable of being used up to its SWL of 750kg. As long as it is subject to its 6 monthly testing it can still fulfill the original need if you do require to use it for wheelchair bound persons. One could just as easily say that one should not take shopping trollies in passenger lifts. Look at it the other way one should be pleased to an extent that the IT people recognised their problem. Posted By J Knight The problem would be using a goods only lift for people; using a lift primarily designed for people for other reasonable purposes isn't an issue provided due account is taken of the various checks and obligations noted by other posters. I, to be frank, gobsmacked that anybody would find a problem with sticking a few PCs on a passenger lift, and it may not be the world, and it may not be Mark E, but somebody or something surely has gone mad here, John
