Responsibility for provision of transport home

In the event of a member of staff needing to go home from their place of work e.g. sick, distressed, welfare reasons, what type of transport should be provided?
I understand that the employer should provide some sort of transportation for an employee who is incapacitated for what ever reason and is unable to drive or uses public transport, however does this provision of transport extend to a colleague using their own car to take a sick etc workmate home?

Hi Stuart,
What's the actual issue here? There isn't in general any particular reason why somebody shoudn't take a sick colleague home, on the ogther hand I don't see that they could be compelled to,

I would hesitantly suggest that the car driver's insurance should cover Business Use as well as the normal Social, Domestic & Pleasure use.
Isn't there a pool car or other company vehicle available?
If not, I would suggest a local taxi firm with another employee riding "shotgun" to provide assistance at the home end of the journey.
Any help?

I agree with the last posting as a form of 'good practice'. However, I cannot see why if a colleague agrees to take another colleague home that would not be equally acceptable. With regards to car insurance I think that this is stretching it a bit far as we are talking about a one-off incident done on a voluntary basis.

Thanks for the responses.
Local management are trying to enforce a condition of if an employee wishes to get on to a works car park rota they should have business insurance to carry out business tasks, including taking sick colleagues home, should the need arise. I was unsure whether it was right for an employee to drive a sick colleague home. I had been advised previously that this was contrary to H&S guidelines as the driver would not be medically qualified should a complication arise.

we either use an employees car - or local taxi, and we dispatch a first aider with the sick employee
