Posted By AlB Does anyone know what restrictions or requirements there are on storing Ammonium Nitrate (raw, not mixed with fuel oil) at quarries? Do you require a licence to store Ammonium Nitrate within quarries?

Posted By Simon J The ACOP for MSER has 33 paragraphs(324-357) on storage and working with Ammonium Nitrate. I do not want to seem unhelpful but it is too difficult to digest it within this forum and I suggest you get a copy of the ACOP which will help you for your specific requirements.

Posted By Clarke Kent As far as I am aware you do require a licence for the storage of ammonium nitrate and there is an annual fee. It has become common practice to contract out the blasting operations to a competent explosives contractor which removes the need for you to store explosives on site, they bring them with them on the day of the blast. Have you considered using a ripper? cheaper and safer, no explosives, blast design, fly rock and it results in sloping faces instead of vertical ones and the risk of how to remove overhanging rocks. Try contacting EPIC or the Institute of Quarrying, they may be able to help or even the HSE Quarries website.

Posted By AlB Thanks for the info - will check out the ACOP. Can't use a ripper as it would not be cost effective - we want stone for monumental use and not for aggregate, so the costs don't add up. Thanks, AlB
