Posted By chris duncan Hi, Ive had a concern from a colleague who works as a derrickman offshore, for those of you not familiar this entails standing on a board, a bit like a diving board (commonly called the monkey board) approx 90ft above the drill floor racking back/running in drill pipe. As protection against falls he is roped from the rear of his harness and also has a enertia reel fall arrest attached, is this suffice? Basically his concern is if he fell off the board how would he recover himself back up? Having seen a derrickman in this position myself the only option was for the strongest to go up the derrick and haul the "conkered" individual back to the board!! This was sometime ago and I wondered if their was anything on the market to deal with problems like this? Thanks. for pic of a derrickman http://www.glossary.oilf...b.com/files/OGL99021.jpg

Posted By Philip McAleenan Chris Essentially your derrickman has identified an omission in your controls, namely the rescue/recovery method for those who have fallen from their workstation. This is crucial in as much as any prolonged period of constriction caused by the harness to the blood vessels on his legs could cause damage leading to amputation of the effected limbs. Re-examine how your would rescue someone in this position, and how long it would take. Note too that your rescue methods must not in themselves put the rescuer is danger of harm. For example, is it possible to install an easily and speedily accessible winch system on or immediately above the workstation? Philip

Posted By A. L. Ure Chris Have you tried the Step Change website? Here's a link - http://step.steel-sci.or...ral/main_general_fs.htm- There is a document called 'Drill Floor Safety - Best Practice Guide to Manriding Safety' but if that's no good, there is also a General Safety discussion forum where you might be able to get some specialist help for the offshore environment. Cheers, Andrew Ure
