Posted By Tina J Ambler Does anyone have experience of undertaking lifting operations using helicopters instead of cranes? If so are there any other things we should be considering apart from noise and LOLER?

I am sure that there will be an expert along in a minute but, in the meantime, I believe that suspended loads can develop a static charge so you will need to fit an earth strap that should touch the ground before anyone touches the load.

Posted By Chris Knagg Hi Tina, I am the Safety Manager for Mivan Telecomms, we specialise in constructing mobile telecom infrastructure and regularly use helicopters to transport materials and equipment into remote locations. PUWER & LOLER apply and there is Civil Aviation Authority document which specifically relates to the use of helicopters for lifting operations. CAP 426 Title: Helicopter External Load Operations Description: Helicopter flying with slung loads requires special precautions to be taken if both air crew and third parties are to be protected from undue risk. Version: 3rd Edition Date: 1 July 1986 View File: Open document in new window (536kb) Can be downloaded at http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAP426.PDFHope this helps. If you have not done any helicopter lifts before, its a dangerous game! My advice is plan, plan and plan again and when you think you have a plan, check it again. We use a number of helicopter operators who are experienced under slung load specialists. Call me if I can help any more 0161 745 5019 or mobile 07753 671521
