I'm currently looking to gain OSHAS 180001 accreditation for the company I work for and was wondering if anyone else who has been down this route could assist me with the necessary steps to achieve this?

Where should i start? What are the basic principles of 180001? (I presume it's based on best practices from HSG's) Is it worth it and is it as widely recognised as Quality ISO 9001 and Environmental ISO 14001 accreditations?

Any help is much appreciated,

Regards,
D

OHSAS 18001 is the next generation of HSG65 and BS8800 loosely. It is likely to become the standard of H&S auditing. It is quite thorough and actualy seems to achieve a measure of appropriateness which HSG65 never did.

Please bear in mind that 18001 is not part of the Memo of Understanding, and therefore does not have the same standing as the other standards you mention. It is likely to be added in the near future, meanwhile all accreditations are done under the "self acreditation" method - even when done by others or at least that is my understanding.

If you are looking for comparison quotations, I recently attended an IOSH course ran by HASTAM (no connection to me whatsoever).

There's a pack of information (including a CDROM) available free from the BSI.

D,

I am currently undertaking research in this area. Specifically whether OHSAS 18001, if 'primarily' driven from the same perspective as ISO 9001 by the customer/supply chain, can improve health and safety performance, especially in SME's.

I have looked at comparisons with ISO 9001 and 14001 by way of drivers for implementation and the resulting outcomes. Therefore feel free to drop me a line direct to discuss.

I assume your company already has a H&S system in place.
If so you are probably 75% of the way there.
If you also have ISO9001 and/or 14001, that will take you to 90%.

It is not self accredited, but your system will need to be audited internally.

I would suggest that you contact BSI, Lloyds or one of the other accreditation bodies as soon as possible. They can do a 'gap analysis' visit that will set you on the right road.

In my opinion you need to be very clear on your reasons for seeking OSHAS 18001 since the independent route could turn out to be cost prohibitive and resource intensive. The reasons for pursuing it need to add value to your organisation.

Testing your safety management system against national or international standards can be done internally (using the safety managements specifications) without going any further, providing you have someone in your organisation sufficiently competent to carry it out. This may be enough to satisfy you that everything is as it should be. It was suggested that you have a gap audit/ analysis carried out, but again this can be done in house. The following link will allow you to download a HSG65 audit checklist which you can use to measure compliance with standards.

http://www.web-safety.com/pdffiles/freeaudit.PDF

For independence there is always the option to have a one-off audit carried out against HSG65, ILO-OSH 2001, OHSAS18001 or any other standard you choose. This may satisfy your organisation or your clients.

Remember to ask who is driving this and what is to be gained by it. Good prevention practices do not always come from outside the organisation. There are choices out there.

Regards

Ciaran

I presume that you have your reasons to seek accreditation to OHSAS 18001. Why dont you get hold of OHSAS 18002.

OHSAS 18002 is as such "Guidelines forImplementation of OHSAS 18001"Not only that, but it includes the full "OHSAS 18001 Specification"

HS(G)65 is a very good basis for an HS management System, but its stuctrure requires its user to devise checklists etc and is less user friendly and has not been revised recently

BS 8800:2004 has extremely useful checlists and guidance in the annexes--Ideal if you are not seeking third party accreditation.

OHSAS 18001 (together with OHSAS 18002) provides the specification and the guidance for auditing--whether external third party or internal.
