Posted By Bill Morrison1 As part of our policy, Occupational Health carry out medicals on all forklift drivers and this has now been moved on to cover lone workers. The medicals are quite straight forward, a general questionnaire, blood pressure check, sight and hearing checks and a urine check. One member of staff has flatly refused to have the medical (lone worker) We have explained the purpose of the medical, all information it treated in complete confidence, but they still refuse to have the medical. Any suggestions/experience on how to tackle this would appreciated Thanks Bill

Posted By Kevin Walker Hi Bill, my instant impression what is the point of the medical? If they as a lone worker have a problem, is the cause likely to be medical or the result of an accident in which case their medical situation may well be irrelevant. However from the perspective of the worker the medical may highlight a condition they are aware of and protecting the information. If all the information is confidential and treated in confidence who is going to be informed of the result. Therefore if a problem is identified what effect is it going to have on their employment. They are within their rights to refuse. With most cases of this nature it is important to understand why they feel they have to refuse, it may be any number of a hundred reasons. cheers kevin
