Posted By Pete Walker Jeremy Vine is about to discuss problems (allegedly) caused by the introduction of the work at height regs. He has aked for e mails from those that are now having to go to extreme measures to change light bulbs etc. Another chance to slate the safety profession?

Posted By Pete Walker I only caught some of his information today a little after 1pm - so he is probably collecting information for tomorrows show. It was not mentioned again after that but it may be available on the BBC web page tomorrow morning. Any comments could be sent direct to Jeremy by the e mail address given in the earlier response.

Posted By Terry Reading Just heard another advert for the topic on this mornings show. Does anyone know whether anyone from IOSH was taken up on the offer? The introduction already sounded one sided.

Posted By Lynne Ratcliffe it is on now! Painful listening! but amusing and informative. Seems to be giving the 'hire it' route - not surprising as the guest so far is from a hire company! strange that! or am i cynical?

Posted By Terry Reading Bill With respect, reread my question more carefully. I asked if IOSH was taken up on their offer. As it is now on it does not sound like it so the point is mute, except that it probably shows IOSH needs more clout.

Posted By David P. Johnson I always find it quite astonishing that people are so amazingly stupid. Common sense dictates that it would not increase the cost of a project by 4/5 by requiring the use of scaffolding as opposed to ladders. And why, why on earth do people blame us as professionals and the "nanny state" for being overbearing - the onus is on risk assessment - if companies cannot assess risks suitably, sufficuently, and without taking the mick, then use somebody else's services! Simple as that! Oh and one other thing, does anybody consider the word "competent" as jargon, or does that say more about the public than anyone else? David

Posted By Stupendous Man Perhaps we could invite Jeremy Vine to present his thoughts on the topic via this discussion forum? I am sure that he will be able to give a suitable summary.

Posted By Lynne Ratcliffe I think Jeremy did quite well, reminding the guest that it was his place to make money by hiring the stuff out and endorsing the no step ladder nonsense for profit.

Posted By Simon Wakeham This was certainly not the most balanced discussion regarding ladders. Unfortunately the point about contractors using the "New Rules" which means they have to work safely, to charge extortionate amounts seems to have been missed completely. I have decided to go into hiring out scaffolding as accoring to this discussion, I will get £2000 to provide a basic tower scaffold for a couple of days. Never mind it was a good headline

Posted By Stupendous Man I missed the discussion, so cannot really comment on the content side of things. It would be interesting, however, to hear the answer to Terry's question above - did the BBC take up the offer of comment from a 'Safety Professional'?
