Posted By Liam Mc Conalogue Hi All, We have been encountering a problem with plasterers using Ts and laying 3 planks across for accessing upper levels of stairwells. We introduced Quickstage scaffolding and had the plastering contractor assist us in choosing a type that would be effective as well as safe and discussed with the aforementioned contractor that some stairwells are considerably narrower than others. HOWEVER, after purchasing this equipment, the plasterer's have found that it does not provide adequate access in all stariwells for a labourer to bring up materials/ plaster. Thus we are back at stage one again. Any construction safety professionals out there who have solved this problem, in keeping with WAHRS. Thanks In Advance, Liam

Posted By Chris Pope Liam - this is a really good question. Even HSE admit this problem is nearly insoluble. However if Oxford is installed properly and bagged material is used some stairwells can be plastered without the labourer going up thro the hatch. I don't know of a standard solution for winding stairs though, other than tube & fittings - and normally this might make access nearly impossible. One solution is to put some bean bags down to mitigate risk but I don't think that is too practical. I've never heard of anyone falling off the old single plank, (albeit thicker than 32mm) resting on an inclined ladder in the straight flight domestic situation: I might be wrong - has anyone investigated stairwell accidents to painters and plasterers ?
