Following my recent thread on the over zealous use of risk and COSHH assessments and method statements, it was drawn to my attention during a training course that a 'household' name in construction, utilities and rail (big clue) has banned the use of ladders on their sites. I did mention of course that this was not a legal requirement under WAHR or any other legislation, indeed, during a recent seminar on working at height, I was informed that the HSE recommend no longer than 30 mins work on a ladder.
I Look forward to your comments.
Regards
Ray

When the WAH Regulations came into effect the HSE said: “Those following good practice for work at height will already be doing enough to comply with the new regulations”. I.E. the regulations were no big deal. They were not introduced because the HSE thought they were necessary, they were introduced because Brussels required it. In a well run company, if ladders were good enough for a job before the Regulations came into effect, they should be good enough afterwards. My organisation has done nothing in response to the introduction of WAH – it is business as usual.
The over-zealous members of this profession make life difficult for all of us by making us something of a laughing stock. With you on this Raymond.
