Our utility maintenance crews work from vans which regularly tow trailers. The original van steps had a very small footprint, which wasn’t easy to use with big/muddy feet (several accidents resulted from slipping & falling). A replacement step is currently being trialed. This runs almost the full width of the van, with a cutout in the middle to accommodate the trailer hitch. Although (hopefully) this is a considerable improvement there are still issues (the step needs to be folded up during driving or it gets damaged by the trailer), and a badly sprained ankle (reportable) has just resulted from someone stepping on the tow hitch.
An integrated step & tow ball assembly used by another major utility company wouldn’t be suitable, as our vans are larger and chassis damage can apparently result from towing heavier trailers (e.g. mini diggers).
I’d appreciate any suggestions regarding alternative steps?

if the design is currently being re-thought why not fit a full width step that covers the towing hitch, if you send me a photo i will gladly analyse it and provide suggestions.

What about a nice set of robust fold down steps which are accessible immediately on opening the doors? OK they'll impinge on the available load space, but you'll have no worries with fouling the trailer,& the steps can be robust as opposed to a flimsier external fold-down option.

Appreciate the suggestions.
A full width step covering the tow hitch would be too high, and would also foul the rear doors. Lowering the tow hitch would result in the trailer being too low (brake assembly/jockey wheel contacts the road).
Fold down steps would only work at the side (if they folded down in the middle they would sit on the trailer frame). A lot of fairly heavy equipment is carried in the van (wackers, breakers, pumps etc), which need to be secured along the sides for stability & ease of access. There currently isn't room to either store or allow access to steps at the sides without major internal refitting (although it worth considering).
Again, thanks for the suggestions, and keep em coming!

Ah...silly me. I has assumed that the trailer would be unhitched before your people would be required to load or unload heavy or awkward items from the rear of the van. So long as you require your employees to clamber over, around or about the A- frame of the trailer, then they will be at risk of injury. Can't see how that can be justified in terms of risk assessment. Perhaps a more adventurous approach would be to have an adaptation to fit between the trailer and the van (some sort of ramp affair) to allow small plant etc to be rolled or carried out via the trailer? (Of course, the trailer then has to be empty!). Failing that, perhaps you should look ot side loading doors when renewing the vehicles!

Thanks Ron. The trailer doesn’t necessarily get in the way of a straight lift, and therefore doesn’t introduce any significant risk when manual handling – confirmed by accident stats (lack of). The initial modification was a full width step, which folded up and required the trailer to be unhitched and reconnected at every task….this did introduce a manual handling risk,
The vans are quite new, so the fleet won’t be renewed in the near future. They are fairly large (Iveco) and have a side door, however the van has been fitted out to use this area to give the crew somewhere to make a cuppa/change into dry kit etc. As the traffic/task sometimes dictates the way the vehicle parks at a job, the side door could open into the flow of traffic (and there isn’t always enough room to impose a suitable safety zone).
