A brief message to alert those responsible for Scottish workplaces that, if you didn't already know, most will become "No Smoking" on 26 March 2006 - there are some exceptions, notably workplaces that aren't enclosed, but they are fewer than you might initially suppose - see Appendix B and C in the Guidance below for what workplaces are included and what are not.
Scottish Executive have developed basic guidance about the new law - which is really designed for "public places", and includes workplaces within these. It's available at http://www.clearingtheai....com/faqs/guidance.html. No doubt there will be loads of queries, but I suggest that a) you read the guidance first; b) you direct queries not to this Forum or IOSH 'experts' in Scotland, but to the contact given on that webpage.
More detailed guidance is said to be coming for the tricky area of care homes, etc. I don't have details of the timescale.
Some IOSH members from Scotland are getting together at the Branch Officials Conference next week - we'll post an update after that if appropriate.

Ian, your posting has absolutely no interest for me. This said I am very pleased to see it on this forum. One of the most valuable functions of IOSH, in my eyes, is to alert us to upcoming legislation in time for us to influence it and in time for us to prepare for it.
Thankyou.
Merv Newman (12th march, mine's an Aberlor, no ice)
