Hi everyone,
I have recently joined my new company and part of my job is Health and Safety, I don't have qualifications in this area but am doing everything correctly (according to my H&E Consultant)so far. I am contemplating doing the "Managing Safely" course, we are a small I.T. company, 10 office based and 10 outworkers and have been told this course would help me with my job. firstly do you all agree this is the course to choose?
Secondly, my main worry is that I may miss updates as the law changes, I have joined many websites to help me but is there anything anyone on here can suggest that will help me in gaining the information as and when it happens?
many thanks

The NEBOSH General Certificate is a really good course to do (generally about 10 days either in block or as individual days) with an exam at the end.
It covers a wide range of H&S aspects and is a good foundation for future professional development.
If you can, also subscribe to Safety & Health Practitioner magazine (WWW.shponline.co.uk) as the monthly magazine keeps you well informed of any changes in the law, case studies and hot topics.
Good Luck

Hi Debbie,
thanks for the information i'll have a look in a minute at the website, my consultant told me that the NEBOSH General Certificate would be far too advanced for our company! I actually printed out everything about that course and it's done at my local college 5 minutes down the road! that's another of my worries that obviously we will be paying this person lots of money, does she really want to loose my business if I become qualified enough??

Nina,
The IOSH Managing Safely course is the right one for you and your tutor should advise you about sources OH&S information including changes in the law.

hi i would defo undertake the nebosh general certificate if i was you. it will pay off trust me, also if i was you i would join something like croner its not to expensive and they give you a news letter every month which gives you every update you need.
i was in your shoes around 18 months ago, so i gained the nebosh construction cert, and iosh, personally i think iosh is a little basic for your job role.

Nina,
You are right. For your organisation and as you are being supervised the NEBOSH General Certificate would be greater than the scope of training that you are seeking.
Arguably if you did the NEBOSH Certificate you would still need a degree of supervision anyway.

i agree to the above to some extent, but its health and safety we are talkin about, and if one is responsible for employees safety surely one must have full understanding of the issues that may occur, also if no one else has the certificate on the company this would be a good starting point pro actively.

Ok, So I think i'm looking at doing the Managing Safely course, I've also subscribed to the magazine Debbie kindly told me about, but are we still saying then that once I have this certificate I'd still need my consultant? and so why?

because iosh managing safely does not teach you how to spot hazards, how to deal with coshh etc, etc , etc. its is strictley managing health and safety, can you tell us more about your duties please.

I feel that Nina has been well advised as to the type of course which would best suite her and her organisation.
IOSH Managing Safely is what it says. It is a basic safety management orientated course which is what Nina is seeking. The syllabus can be found on http://www.iosh.co.uk/in...o=courses.managingSafely
The NEBOSH General Certificate is generally a more technical orientated course and details of this can be found on http://www.nebosh.org.uk/awardsnew.asp?ID=5
Neither course would give the candidate a “full understanding of the issues that may occur”.

Basically i'm having to deal with everything, have done procedures for VDU workers, set up a co eyecare scheme, doing first aid course, bought a first aid box, arranging fire drills etc..........
having had a look at the course material for the Managing safely course in module 3 it covers hazard identification techniques and to be honest i'm more than capable of doing that part myself, I have done some of this before I just don't have the qualifications.

Hi Nina,
Suggest you sign up to free email alert service e.g. workplacelaw.net
This should give you enough information about upcoming legislative and other developments.
Good luck, Peter

Hi, www.lawline.com is a good source of information.. they are attached to a law firm. sorry can't recall the name... it is 3 names think it is Mclay, Lawrie, Spence or something like that. If you register with them you will get a monthly email updating all changes in H&S law, case studies, trends etc.
Re training I guess you pays your dosh and take your pick. Depends on how far you wish to take H&S as a career. Remember the Management regs call for "competent H&S advice" I suppose you could always check with your friendly local HSE inspector or EHO dep't if the basic managing safely or indeed the NEBOSH cert is enough. could mean losing the consultant and saving on the cost of them. Remember DSE assessment re muscular injuries is a biggy in modern offices. ROSPA run a good 2 day course on this..should set you up as competent to do the assessments. I have a DSE users booklet that i developed that may help as you can give it to your employees.. covers set up and use of dse in a simple but comprehensive way.
Cheers.
