I have been asked about whether computers and other peripheral equipment should be switched off over night.
Do any of your companies issue guidance on this matter or do you have a policy?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes we have a policy to switch off overnight this saves on energy costs and safety reasons are that if an electrical fault develops in a an appliance it may start a fire which would not be discovered until a considerable amount of damamge had been done.
It is hard to enforce however as my colleaugues are so forgetful .. bless 'em (grits teeth!)

If you switch off computers every evening you will save in the region of £20 per computer per year in energy costs.
You will also significantly reduce carbon emissions.
The Carbon Trust provide lots of free guidance, posters etc. for promoting this, as well as other ways of saving energy.

Been fighting this one for years both on the Safety and Environmental fronts. However, IT in all their wisdom argued that breakdowns would drastically increase and also, critical updates were performed overnight and therefore PC's couldn't be switched off.
We have introduced a powersave programme that automatically puts monitors to standby after they have been idle for a short period of time but I'm still trying to get the "golden fleece" but the odds seem to be against me.

Switch them off....any excuse from IT (we're only here to make HR look good) are telling porkies...two of the bruvs' are IT programmers and they state that updates are made on the network, therefore the server and any remote servers. Workstations, ie individual PC's, tend to have their updates on boot up so you wont notice them going any slower than they already do....so save energy and switch off and don't forget to break wind into a bag or box, apparently we are running out of natural resources....it may also give GM another excuse to lay people off!
