Posted By Alias Is there a frequency with which this should be done does anyone know please? What exactly is involved? Any light on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Emma.

Posted By Richard Webber Emma The inspection of emergency lighting is to ensure that all units are operating as they should and will provide illumination if required. To this end the following routine may be of help. Weekly visual inspection of all units in escape routes Record any defects identified and Rectify ASAP Monthly test all luminaries for quarter of expected duration Ask occupants/staff to report any defects Hope that this helps Richard

Posted By John Lewis If memory serves it is BS5266 that deals with e.lights. The testing procedure can be quite time consuming if it is not planned well because it calls for each luminaire to be energised once a month, typically for 15 minutes and then for an hour each quarter and 3 hours once a year. May not be strictly correct but that is the principle. Facilities Managers complain (as I used to) that there is not enough time and then go and talk to the Fire Brigade. The Brigade usually comment that it is a BS and not law and ask you to consider your defence in court after a fire? The most helpful one I had applied the Risk assessment approach that if your lights work each time they are tested then perhaps you can justify relaxing the test regime so long as the thought process is clearly recorded. Of course, to reach a state of affairs where you can reasonably justify relaxation of the BS you will need at least a year of data to justify the change. By that time in my experience the team have testing off to a fine art and carry out their work efficiently anyway ......... so no need to relax the BS. Another comment I had was that there are so many premises that do no testing whatsoever the Brigade are only too happy to talk to someone who does it and are far less likely to hassle you. Same goes for the HSE as well. If you are confident of your systems ask them to come in for a chat and a coffee and they will hardly if ever take you up on it, but they do remember that you are confident enough to ask them in if there is a problem. Hope that helps. John
