Posted By Jonathan Sandler A very large retail shop is haveing refurbishment works carried out. Part of the works has ment that the carpark has a number of pinch points, with no safe means of access and egress for the shoppers, who also have small childern with them, the refurb work comes under CDM. Q. Does there have to be a designated safe route for shoppers to and from the car park? Q. If the answer is yes, which I think, there should be, should this be reported to LA or HSE, designers failure to identify as part of reg 13 CDM, I have also taken into concideration Occupires Lib. All comments welcome. Thanks for your time

Posted By J Knight Jonathon, Reg 17(1) of Workplace Regs: 'Every workplace shall be organised in such a way that pedestrians and vehicles can circulate in a safe manner'. Para 171 of the guidance talks about sufficient width to allow vehicles to pass pedestrians safely, and goes on to say that a traffic managment system can be substituted if it is not possible to make the traffic route wide enough. So yes; traffic routes h=must be safe and allowance must be made where vehicles and pedestrians share access. LA might be interested; the HSE certaibnly were interested when I complained about the chaos outside the station redevleopment in Sheffield, John
