Posted By Norman Mcleod I am looking for some guidance on the sheeting of vehicles with regard to the Working at Height Regs. Can anyone offer me some advice on if you are required to sheet vehicles, tipper lorries ranging from 3.5t - 12t - 18t - 26t from the ground using a specific mechanism or if the use of a fixed ladder on the side of the lorry will be enough to cover the requirements. I am involved in purchasing new fleet early 2006 and was wondering if i should advise on purchasing sheeting devices from ground level (costly) or if they are ok with fixed ladder points on the sides of the lorries or if i have no choice in the matter and must provide some kind of sheeting device operated at ground level to lessen the risk to drivers under the hierarchy of controls and being reasonably practicable. Can anyone out there help. Regards N.McLeod

Posted By Bill Waddy Hi Norman We have several haulage companies delivering Seed in large bulk trucks to our sites across the UK. We do not allow any driver to climb on his truck to sheet up - all must arrive on site with the "Easy Sheet" mechanism installed. This is written into the contracts sent to the hauliers. Would suggest you adopt the more expensive ground mechanism as I'm sure other major companies around the UK who have a strong safety culture will insist on this requirement. May work out as a good investment! Cheers Bill Waddy (Cargill PLC)

Posted By AlB Norman, The business I work for also require all of our regular hauliers (who carry crushed stone) to have the "Easy Sheeting" installed. There are pros and cons to this though: Pros: Safe and requires no climbing on trailers Is clean - drivers don't get dirty, cabs don't get dirty Is easy - push the button and up it goes! The driver does not need to get out of his cab It's very efficient and takes around 20 seconds to sheet as opposed to 5 minutes manually Cons: It costs a couple of hundered quid to install. The cost benefits alone point out to having it installed. It's a no-brainer really once you've seen what "Easy Sheet" has to offer.
