We have a hearing impaired member of staff complain about the noise(84 to 94dBA) from our fire alarms duing our weekly, mandatory test.He could of course absent himself for the scheduled time !!However,is there a problem with these new digital hearing aids & fire alarm type noise? Could the problem not simply be the loudness, but also the frequency? Hence, is there a frquency that alarms should be pitched !!! to minimise this effect?

My brother once had (I think the RNID) come around to where he worked.
They sent a blind man, sounds strange, but a blind person apparently has very sensitive hearing abilities.
Anyway, they were given an assessment by the charity and in the end the company obtained a grant in order to help the 12 employees on the site.
I beleve with the grant they were able to supply equipment such that to assist with the use of fire alarms and presentations within team briefs.
I think the company obtained £30K and their financial contribution was minimal.

Thanks Graeme,
The frequency of the sounders was indeed 500 to 1000 Hz.
So will have to investigate further. We await his return to work for an OH investigation. He has always been advised when to miss the regular(weekly) alarm tests.
Regards,Paul
