How many people does it take to lift a fridge freezer....

Hi All,
I've got a couple of maintenance operatives tasked with delivering a number of fridge freezers to flats via stairs (no lifts available). Max height is four flights. The manually operated stair lifters (3 wheeled trolleys) aren't really suitable due to weight and size of the fridges. It's a minimum two man job and the guys have asked for alternative solutions in the way of (possibly) hydraulic lifting equipment or some other piece of kit to help them out.
(Nice to hear the M.O's ask the question in the first place - instead of struggling on... Better than, 'can we have some new kit as Fred's had an accident using the old one... :-)
Had a quick look through SHP back issues for ideas in the new products section and had a flick through the net but am getting lazy...
Anyone out there solved a similar problem?
Will probably hire in the first instance to test it out but may buy for the long term as this is a recurring concern over a number of properties and we replace annually in most cases.
Cheers,
James

Posted By Paul Oliver Hi James,
is this a new build development? or an existing building.
If its new build and its 4 storeys and above there should be lifts installed. I would speak to the builders site rep and explain your need to use these. If this falls on deaf ears then speak to their safety manager.
If it is an exisiting building and there are no lifts and you have to move the fridges manually, can you: Remove the doors off the fridges to reduce overall weight. Employ more than two people to handle, therby reducung the overall amount of handling by indiviuals. You can also hire larger mechanical stair climbers to move items such as american fridge freezers.
cheers

Posted By James Byatt Paul,
Old building, hense no lifts. Available resources limit the amount of people doing the task and yes, my aim is to look at alternative, mechanical means of lifting.
Good idea bout removing the doors to reduce weight, I'll pass that on and see if it's easy to do. I suspect these are fully packaged, new appliances so maybe stripping them down to the basics prior to lifting will help...
