A company decides to modify a piece of work equipment, a dumper truck for intance by mounting a small lifting device (locally manufactured) on it to aid with kerb laying. How will this mod be dealt with with respect to declarations of conformity / incorporation etc, bearing in mind it is for its own use and not for re-sale, hire or distibution to third paries.

It will obviously need to be tested and examined to conform with LOLER and it will also need to be suitable for the tasks it will be used for under PUWER.
I would suggest that contact should be made with the dumper manufacturer regarding this, to ensure it is safe to do. If this is not possible a specialist or an engineer to offer advice on the correct procedures.

Would it be safe to say then from your coments that there is no need to go down the CE marking path and all that that encompasses?

Presumably there is no intention to 'place goods on the market', therefore modifications are under your own cogniscance and H&S legislation (PUWER, LOLER etc as others suggest) - no need to satisfy CE marking/ declaration of conformity issues.Important to remember that there will be potential pitfall if you dispose of the item to another user, whether by gift on resale. Of course it would be sensible to speak to the manufacturer regarding warranty and safety implications.
Above reply does not apply to any electrical or shielding modification which would cause the machine to interfere via EM fields with other equipment - I'm guessing that you could still be 'done' under ye olde wireless telegraphy legislation, or face civil action?

Gentlemen, thank you for your comments. They are roughly what I expected due to the equipment not being marketed in any shape or form, but trying to find out was more difficult than I ever imagined. Thank goodness for the Forum :)
