Posted By Martin Hartland Hi Robert There’s no legal requirement to fit mirrors. Look at PUWER Part III, it says where vision may be impaired “devices” should be fitted to improve vision, it doesn’t have to be mirrors but for FLTs it usually will be. Your risk assessment should decide this for you. Regards Martin Hartland

Posted By Chris Pope The word on the block is that HSE inspectors want to be able to be seen all the way around an FLT when 1m from it. CCTV is better of course, but providing a workable solution is up to you.

Posted By Barry Cooper HSE will test visibility from the drivers seat using a rod, 1 metre long. They position it 1m away from the truck all the way around. If the driver can see the rod, then visibility is acceptable. We had new bale and reel clamp trucks, and the visibility was very poor, couldn't see the item to be picked up. HSE, stated that although the 1m rod test was ok, if visibility was unacceptable we would have to fit devices to improve it.
