Did anyone else hear Lisa Jardine on the Today Programme? She was asserting that "Health and Safety" rule the world on the basis that a disaffected maintenance man stopped her from climbing an unsecured ladder to fix a banner and informed her that the job couldn't be done because the requisite man to climb and man to foot weren't available. Her response was to do the job "by stealth" by stacking a chair on top of two tables. Can we have an official response by IOSH preferrably in person in the form of an interview of our President on the Today Programme please?

I heard it.

To quote the great Joe Walsh: "You can't argue with a sick mind".

In my oppinion a response by IOSH will fall on deaf ears, unless the IOSH respondee also happens to be of the academic persuasion (Dr, Professor etc.), as it is very likely that she will not listen to the great unwashed.

Let's not forget that 'The Today Show' has editorial resonsibility for all content. I have heard many other contributions to the 'Who Runs Britain?' slot, all of which at least attempted to give a balanced viewpoint. This piece was not balanced in the least.

Maybe a request for justification of such a biased piece should be sent to the BBC, copied to the Minister for Culture, Media and Sport. License-fee payers paid for that drivel. No doubt the BBC paid Lisa Jardine.

Richie.

Anne

Just to say though that Neil may be hi-jacked on this as they are in the midst of this strange poll to see Who Rules Britain.

Good point Anne - don't forget these are the same poeple (ie the listerners) who voted for a "people's law" a few years ago to make it legal to kill burgulars and other disreputables you might find on your premises!

I was very disappointed at Neils response on the Today programme on Saturday, I don't think he put up a very good defence at all and it was a missed opportunity to defend sensiible H&S.

This appears to be in line with other programmes transmitted on television.
One programme comes instantly to mind, an episode of 'Life of Grime' in which Environmental Officers were televised at an empty property picking up discarded hypodermic needles with his bare hands, and dispositing them into a black bin bag which he then flung onto a pile of rubbush.
This was followed, on Channel 4, by two ladie property developers using sledge hammers to smash up the Cemented Asbestos sheeting from the verandah of a recently purchased house.

I can't believe that I missed both the original diatribe and Neils response on Saturday.

As I don't have a sound card, I can't even listen over t'internet.

Still, what I want to know is when are IOSH going to respond to the mocking that "elf 'n' safety" received on last weeks Basil Brush Show?
