I am just putting together a risk assessment for a small team of joiners / cabinet makers who are due to undertake a one month contract in Moscow in the new year. I am fairly happy with what I need to cover, but just wondered if any one had any recent issues or hot topics from any of there own employees experiences, who may have been working there recently?
It is possible that there may be some more obscure issues which I have not yet identified.

take lots of thermals
don't drive anywhere yourself
have some cash for tips (bribes)
lay off the vodka for breakfast & Lunch
watch out for the very friendly ladies in the hotel (unless you are into that sort of thing)
Take dollars for spending as no-where takes sterling

Contact the home office for any specific advice they might have for the area to be travelled too.
Insurance is another issue to consider - what if one of the contractors has a serious accident, could they be repatriated by air ambulance back home?
You may have already included the above in your assessment though!

Have you thought about:
Kidnap and Ransom - Big in Moscow with western workers
Effects of Climate - Depending on time of year and environmental conditions freezing Skin Conditions (Frostbite) or Hypothermia
The usual travel health issues - Food Poisoning, HIV etc
Repatriation in the event of an incident?
Liability excemptions/warranties/Exclusions in your EL/PL Insurances.

When my husband worked in Russia one of their favourite saying's was "We know of this technology" - they didnt have it but they knew about it. Tomato sauce is very useful to disguise some of the food flavours or non flavours - small tool sets also made very useful gifts (bribes)- I dont know too much about Moscow itself but Mafia activity is very big in Russia and shootings do happen, so dont be surprised if you hear a few horror stories when they return. In general people very friendly and helpful.

There are some friendly people but there are the odd few that like to try and take advantage - although they may be friendly at first - When I worked there a few years ago a kindly gentleman took myself and some colleagues to look at the workings of the bridges over the river, unfortunately when we arrived he pulled a gun on us and demanded money the guy who worked inside the bridge was also in on this!! Luckily the police intervened! So the moral is not to trustworthy over there!!!
