Dust (Lead, maganese, Zinc, Copper) Control measures

Posted By Geoff S Bottomley An incinerator is about to be removed from an area within a building. We have had a dust survey done and the results have said that there is a large quantity of Lead dust as well as other metals (Manganese, Zinc, Copper). The sort of result you would expect from incinerator dust. The only reference in EH 40 is dust of any kind i.e. (10 mg Inhalable, 4 mg respirable) The CLAW regs gives no indication of Lead dust limits. Can anyone give advise on things to consider apart from the obvious control measures of things to consider. The company who will be doing the removal will send the method statement and risk assessment to me which I will scrutinise before work commences. Your help will be much needed

I suggest you re-read EH40 and CLAW. You WILL find reference to exposure limits for lead, copper, manganese. For Zinc, I suggest you use the old exposure limit (EH40 2004).
Generally, any metal at room temp will be in the form of a dust/fume (particulate). There are exceptions (I can think of one anyway ;-)).

Manganese and copper are both listed in EH40/2005; see CLAW Reg 2 for the lead in air limit.

Posted By Geoff S Bottomley Thanks guys can't see for looking. Could you help me further. Not being good at maths Claw states 0.15 mg/m3 Survey states 1156 (mg/Kg)
Please translate.

There is no direct translation. If the dust contains lead at 1156 mg/kg, the concentration of the metal in the air will depend on how much of the dust gets airborne. For example, if the total dust concentration is 10 mg/m3, the lead concentration would be a bit less than 1/10 of the lead in air limit; but, if the total dust concentration was 1 mg/m3, the lead conc. would be a bit less than 1/100 of the lead in air limit.
