Can any one tell me or point me in the direction where I can find information relating to the legal stance for the erection of non lethal electric fences. Are there any BS/EN standards or H&S guidnace covering the issue?

cheers Gary

Gary,

Electric security fences are derived from the same technology as the ones made for live stock enclosures. The legal maximum output is limited to 5 Joules under a 500-Ohm load.

All electric fencing systems whether for livestock or security are required to comply with the relevant standards, in Europe: European/British Standards BSEN 61011 220V/110V, BSEN 61011-2 Battery, BS 60335-2-76 and relevant EMC Standards; United States, UL 69.

Put BS61011 in a search and you will find some manufactures with guidance on their websites.

Hope this helps

Have a look on the DEFRA website (www.defra.gov.uk), type 'electric fence' into the on site search engine, there's lots of information there.

All

Thanks for the info, I have also found out that the BSIA also have a code of practice for the installation, maintenance and use of electric fences. We have an issue where we need to keep out pirate radio operators from our masts and sites and we are looking at the use of non lethal systems.

Just for info the HSE have a FOD OM on electric security fences that details all of the different standards that are required. It is labelled OM2003/110.
