Hi all,

I have recently received information from a company that claims we must have our lifts examined by a competent person to meet SAFed LG1 requirements (evidently, 1 year, 5 years and 10 years). Our lifts are currently examined every 6 months in accordance with LOLER Requirements (people carrying), do they need this additional inspection?

Any advice would be appreciated, Regards Vince

What type of lifts are you talking about? Persons/Passenger. Goods only, internal external? Regards

Sorry about the delay.

The lifts are internal passenger lifts (but rarely used)

What is the significance of internal or external?

Regards, Vince

Safed is not law, just a higher standard, which you can meet if you wish to unless your insurer demands this standard

Ideally the CP carrying out the thorough examination recommends the LG1 tests to ensure the lift is safe to continue in service. These are tests and examinations which are beyond the scope of the Thorough Examination. However in the absence of such a recommendation (or in the absence of a Thorough Examination - not a statutory req if lift not used at work)then the tests may be recommended by the company carring out the maintenance as a matter of good practice - which indeed they are. LG1 has caused much confusion and is being altered to address this first quarter 2006.

Also note you may need a competant and trained person on site (or close by) to be able to deal with freeing people trapped within the lift. Our local fire authority has informed us that they will no longer be peromfing this duty and presume others will be or already are following suit.
