Does anyone know what the powder is in a dry powder fire extinguisher and what the possible hazards are?

I believe they can contain Sodium Bicarbonate or Ammonium Sulphate

Peter

Go to http://www.chubb.co.uk/pdfs/GPSv2.pdf

This is the MSDS from Chubb's web site and should give you the info you require.

Thanks to all, the reason for my post is that I am being charged for disposal of only dry powder extinguishers because of environmental issues, the MSDS indicates they are good for the environment as the substance is biodegradeable and is possibly a fertiliser does anyone have any views or experience on this?

I'm just a little intrigued as to why Chubb deems it necessary to use a hard had when cleaning up spillages - or is this to be used for scooping it up? :-)

There have been some variations in the powder used over the years and between different suppliers. If you need to be precise go to the supplier of the extinguisher concerned or to whoever has subsequently refilled it. However, as far as the normal DP extinguishers are concerned it's all going to be very much the same with fairly low risks.
