Posted By SDJC Dear All,
Heavy duty lathes in a mechanical workshop will typically have chucks which weigh around 40kg or 45kg.
Given that the handling is awkward and there is much stooping, twisting and reaching there is potentially a diffcult manual handling issue.
Does anybody have experience of find clever solutions to such problems? We have thought of using the type of sling which a mechanic might use to take an engine out of a car. Alternatively a telescopic jib for a hand-operated lift truck...
Any other ideas?
Many thanks!

Posted By Saracen11 A floor mounted hoist to get the things on and off the lathe has worked well in the past in my experience! Remember AFARP? The MH regs place a duty on the employer to reduce the risk of injury ARARP... not sure what the chapter and verse is but the aformentioned aid or something similar would fall into this catagory.
Good luck!

Posted By Bob Baynes We use a small hand pumped hydraulic lifting device for this job supplied by Tirfor (now Tractel) Don't know if they still make them. It has a platform which can be folded back to allow a short jib to be unfolded, you can use whichever is best. The base has a lock which when undone, allows the wheels to move under the lathe. I know that is not always possible. On our larger lathe we had a lifting beam and chain block mounted above the lathe, the chuck is picked up for mounting from the floor at the tailstock end and slid along the beam and into place. Removal is obviously just reverse procedure. Hope this helps.
