Posted By paul debney Has anybody else had to zone their battery charging areas under DSEAR regs. If so what category under schedule 2 of the regs have you used. The enforcing authority has specified that we do this in?

Posted By gham You would have to monitor for Hydrogen levels if they are between 4 and 78% in air the atmosphere would be explosive as this is the Flammable range in air.
Hydrogen realse MAY only occur whn charging but when no charging is taking place the 'Zone' would be unclassified. check with you FLT maintenance or battery supplier. It also depends on the ventilation in the area and the number of truck being charged at the same time.
I have heard of this before but it never crossed our path........ yet

Posted By Frank Hallett Hi Paul
This kind of activity is not what the DSEAR was intended to control.
I'm not convinced that the DSEAR actually apply to the charging of FLTs as the generation of the gases is not strictly a "process" although I cannot deny that it is a by-product. Additionally, the provision of appropriate ATEX rated equipment for this is going to be a challenge.
I would normally advise that the DSEAR don't apply but that PUWER, CoSHH and the FP[W] Regs do.
We had extensive discussions on the application of DSEAR before Xmas, perhaps locating that thread might help.
