Posted By Tim Corbett Does anyone have any warnings/issues with this. Can the bike be operated safely with one hand? What is the safe angle it can be used at on a slope? Working by water? Any comments would be of interest.
Many thanks

Posted By Ron Hunter We've had problems in the past with contractors spraying and driving at same time. Akin to using a mobile 'phone whilst driving - you can't focus on 2 tasks at once, and are not in control of the vehicle whilst using only one hand, therefore prohibited! Vehicle manfr should be able to assist with max slope vehicle can cope with, could fit indicator to vehicle, ROP may be required, also a training issue, (all similar to ride-on mowers). Work near water very much dependant on local ground slope, conditions, pathways etc, then again, do you really want to be spraying near watercourses?

Posted By John Lewis I had this to deal with a few years ago. The contractor opted to use a miniature spray bar similar to those you see on full size tractors, but about eight feet long. The ground was flat so no problems with slopes. At my insistence he wore a proper motorcycle helmet and fitted a beacon on a pole at the back.
The biggest issue was the spray he used and the attendant mist problems. Conditions had to be absolutely still with no air movement at all and he also wore a chemical suit. Funnily enough we had two wheel washers for cleaning JCB wheels. One had algae in it the other did not. A year later I realised that was where he washed down the quad bike and cleaned the spray unit!

Posted By Edward H HSE's Agricultural Info Sheet 33 "Safe use of ATVs..." [http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/ais33.pdf] has a section on spraying and clearly states that holding a spray lance is not on. It also has lots of good advice on stability etc.

Posted By Daniel Stonehouse Having read all of the posts i was just about to blow my top and write - "why would anyone even contemplate using a quad bike - or any other two handled machine/vehicle etc. in this way? Is the machine designed to be used with one hand? NO!!! Is it safe? OBVIOUSLY NOT!!! sorry, but anyone who is thinking of sanctioning this has some serious issues with safety. " And then i remember looking out of my bedroom window during the summer and seeing two such bikes, one going down each pavement on a terraced street, with the 'driver' holding a weed spraying gun. Not that they would have done much good, mind - they were doing about fifteen miles an hour and it was going everywhere - cars, walls etc. This was nottingham by the way, if anyone recalls it. I still hold by the first part of my posting though - dont do it! And why even ask if you can? No offence meant.

I totally agree. I to have witnessed the same quite often and wondered if some sort of waver had been given to this way of working? I wanted to see if anyone else had come into contact with this type of work and what controls had been put upon it, as most of it seems to be for Local Gov. or Highways? There seems to be the usual double standard looking at HSE notes and what I have seen. I am still awaiting the RA from contractor?

Posted By Robert K Lewis Daniel's response touches on a key point - The Control of Pesticides Regs makes the operation he describes a direct breach of the requirements to control the spray to the areas requiring treatment only. It is not an HSE issue though as these are enforced by another ministry. Also it applies to domestic and commercial situations, so don't overspray your neighbours garden accidently.
I've seen a number of these vehicles with purpose made tanks and spraybars used on sports fields but they would be no use on any significant slope due to the CoG changes involved with a tank of liquid.
