Posted By Frank Hallett Now, I know that this will raise a smile with some; but I consider that my recent experience should be shared despite the embarrassment. Why? Because it's possible that the email that I use on this Forum may have been the start point! Yesterday, I received 2 emails from sufficiently different senders to not get caught by my Spam deflector. Both identified that my web site had not responded correctly to their browsers and included attachments that alleged to be related to that with an offer of providing services to fix it. Unfortunately, once the message was read, the attachments opened and infected my computer with a Trojan that goes by the wonderful name of "Win32/OutsBot!generic". Who dreams this stuff up? I've now spent all morning trying to get rid of it and still have some more to do; and may need to get a techie wizard to finish it off. Good job I have the 2nd computer & the laptop. Please take care, and if you get any messages that include the above, or the word "Mozzella" [I think that's how it went], immediately delete, delete & delete again! Don't forget to delete from the "Deleted files" folder as well. Frank Hallett

Posted By Robert K Lewis The other word of warning when these pop up as message windows is never ever attempt to use the usual windows close button on the top right corner as this is set to open/install the programme or whatever by these freaks - a complete reversal of the normal functioning. Heigh ho off we go again. Frank I found Hi-jack This a very good site to get rid of those that infect the windows register keys etc. They will advise on what to remove but it can take a couple of days. Ad-aware and Spybot are also good I find but they do need constant update. I'm wondering if one of these techies could develop a reverse virus so that it travels back to the originator and blows up the hard drives and bios in one hit. Ah well! day dreams over Bob

Posted By Sheila EJ Keogh Great idea about the reverse virus! A super-techie who could do this would be worth his weight in gold!! (after a manual handling r.a. of course!)

Posted By Nick House Another measure you can take is NOT to use the 'preview pane' in email programs - this often has the effect of opening the email for you before you can delete it!

Posted By Dave Wilson I'm a bit sceptical to go to any site and download anything where the 'poster' does not let you see their email address!!!

Posted By gham Quite Right David The exact reason why i don't share my email address, I am selective over who I do that with and it also helps reduce the possibility of getting Tronjan Horses, Worms and Spam email G'

Posted By David.G.C sorry for not disclosing my details but i have used both of these sites for web pest info and i am more that happy with the results. Many posts on this forum from other members who decide not disclose their details recommend links to sites which i am sure others visit without caution. how many have done this!!!!!!!! My advice is...Obtain decent anti virus not forgeting firewall ensure it is updated regularly and you should'nt have many problems.

Posted By Brett Day Partly from this but also from a thread regarding agencies 'harvesting' e-mail addresses, something that other discussion forums do is have a members profile section where the active link is not an e-mail address but a link to a page with the members e-mail is printed to use it, it has to be cut and pasted into the e-mail program. It won't stop someone manually 'harvesting' e-mail addresses but does stop automatic systems. Worth considering on this forum??

Posted By Dave Wilson Take your point but when I go to other sites to download or look at H&S stuff it is just that, H&S Stuff nothing to do with protecting my PC. never open anything from a source you do not know, my spam and AV filters it all and is just deleted.

Posted By John Mackessack Hi Frank, Sorry to hear your woes! However, if you see 'MOZILLA' do not discard it outright without further thought or research. Mozilla write freely downloadable software which is very good. Their 'Firefox'internet browser is as functional as Microsoft's internet explorer but because only about 5% of PC users have been enlightened to it, the spammers, hackers etc don't target it. So it is inherently less hassle. Look up Mozilla and get a quiet life!

Posted By Descarte Also for your consideration is Trend Micro's free online virus scan FREE on-demand service scans your PC for viruses, spyware, and more. Trend Microâ„¢ HouseCallâ„¢ is a FREE Web-based solution designed to scan your PC for a wide range of Internet security threats including viruses, worms, Trojans, and spyware. It also detects system vulnerabilities and provides a link so you can easily download missing security patches. After each scan, HouseCall delivers a detailed report, which identifies security threats detected on your computer. Bonus here is that it also searches for spyware etc. and can delete them all for you if you want tit too. And gives info about windows security updates. http://www.trendmicro.com Very popular, very good and very easy to use. I do
