Posted By Brett Day Have worked on petrol station projects in the past where the client has put new (larger) tanks in, the old tanks still being leak tight have been filled with expanding foam, a note made of the location and capped rather than being dug up. As environmental isn't my strong point does anyone know if there is any prohibition on this as a current practice? Alternatively any contacts I should be speaking to. I have spoken to the environment agency but they told me we have someone who can help, I was passed around on hold and then cut off. If anyone knows this 'person in the know' and has a contact number it would be greatly appreciated.

Posted By steven bentham Leaving the tanks in for demolition of the petrol station (with information for future developer) seems okay. A number of tanks I have come across have been drained, vented and filled with sand. Any what are not generally cold cut by cutting the ends off (grinding or hot work = bang)

Posted By Brett Day Thanks for that gents, the things going bang was the reason that We'd used foam previously but someone on the project said that it couldn't be done for environmental reasons but offered o further info. But I decided to check it out anyway just in case, not that I can find anything. As for the car not starting, a friend half filled his diesel car with petrol - 50/50 mix works but it smokes like a good 'un !!

Posted By JEFFREY SMITH The foam specified should be an 'inert' foam. The MOD have a couple of hundred sights around the country where this has been done. The foam goes into the tank and hardens effectively trapping any horribles and therefore cannot leak back into the environment. I am not sure if this can be cut but presumably since inert, shouldn't cause any problems. Hope this helps.

Posted By Fred Pratley Some years since I dealt with this, but the option then was to concrete fill. Had to liase with local Fire Safety officer, who was on hand while it was done. Suggest talking with your local fire service. Fred

Posted By renown Like Fred, last time I dealt with a disused petrol tank, I had to contact the local Fire Brigade and have the tank filled up with concrete. The Fire Officer had to be in attendance when this was done. This was back in 2000.

Posted By B.Gee The local petroleum officer should be able to provide advice. As for filling and recording for future re-development it is very rare that the site owners have records of the fill material and in some (most)cases if the tanks even exist! B.G
